Ignoring Creditors & Collectors
Don’t laugh! Doing nothing does have the single advantage of temporarily keeping money in your pocket. But that advantage is extremely short-lived when you discover that your creditors and collectors begin to come after you for payment.
Before the computer age, only your local credit bureau had the ability to track you down and make you pay. With the advantage of new and powerful computer software, creditors and collectors have made delinquent debt a very valuable commodity. Debt can be sold or rented to third-party collectors for years and years.
Many unscrupulous collectors have been sued or fined by the government for falsely reporting payments or activity on credit reports. Such activity re-ages the debt to make it collectible and more valuable to collectors that have paid just pennies on the dollar for your old account.
Remember, in many states, even if the Statue-of-Limitations has expired on your debt, the debt can still be collected (just not through the courts). |
